Skype.com

Skype is just a fantastic piece of software that really deserved to be featured here sooner. Basically Skype is a piece of free software for making phone calls over the net.

Calls to other Skype users is totally free, no matter where they are in the world. So if you’re sick of racking up a huge bill talking to relatives overseas, all you need is for both of you to get Skype and you can talk as long as you want without it costing you a thing!

Calling regular phones is simple and easy but you do need to pay for them. You just buy some Skype credit and then you can start calling. The credit is pretty cheap, so Skype can help you save money on your regular calls too! Ideally all your family and friends will get Skype as well, then you don’t have to worry about credit at all!

Using Skype is easy, the install takes less than 2 minutes. You will have to sign-up for a Skype account but it’s free and simple. Once loaded, Skype will show you a contact list indicating who is online and who isn’t. Adding contacts is easy and you can also find random Skype users to talk to using the SkypeMe! mode if you are bored. Sound quality and reception is as clear as any telephone, although having a good quality microphone and speakers/headphones will make sure everything sounds as crisp as possible.

Other features include the ability to communicate with your Skype contacts via instant messaging (just like ICQ or Windows Live Messenger) if you don’t feel like talking. You can even IM while on a phone call, this is great for sending web links or something with a specific spelling that your contacts can just copy & paste as they like. You can also transfer files like other IM applications, so you can use Skype for a lot more than just voice calls.

Another fantastic feature is the ability to make video calls and if you’ve seen an episode of Oprah lately, you’ll notice that a lot of people call in to the show, via video, using Skype! The program has been around for a long time now so it is very polished and stable. If you’ve never used it before, download it and try it out today!

Acobox collects, screens, and hosts quality pictures for bloggers. All images are properly licensed, optimized, and ready use with blogs. For adding a picture to any blog post, all a blogger needs to do is simply copy and paste a piece of image code, without downloading, resizing or uploading the image file themselves. It’s simple, easy, and free!

This really is a handy service for bloggers to have, in fact anyone with any kind of website will like Acobox.com. It is especially useful those who aren’t tech savvy or who don’t have access to decent image editing software for resizing their images. Acobox.com does these things for you and more importantly, all of their images are properly licensed, so you know that you can use them legally and free!

The above image is just one of thousands of images available on Acobox.com, I decided to pick this one because it’s so cute. There are many categories to choose from, including a people category where you’ll find actors, historical figures and even soon-to-be US president Barrack Obama!

One of the most annoying things when using a PC is NumLock. If you aren’t paying attention and NumLock is off, you can start typing a big string of numbers before you realise nothing is appearing on screen and you have to do it all again. Now, in some situations you will find that when you boot up your PC, NumLock is switched off by default. This post will show you how to change that, so NumLock is always on when you start your PC!

I’ll include a quick fix for those who have used Regedit before and for those who haven’t, I’ll include a more detailed explanation with pictures for reference.

Quick Fix

Open Regedit

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\

Then set InitialKeyboardIndicators to a value of 2

Done!

Detailed Guide

To change the setting of NumLock on startup in Windows XP, you’ll need to use regedit, which is a tool for editing the Windows Registry, you can read more about it in this Wikipedia article. Do be careful when you are using Regedit, if you change the wrong settings it could cause a lot of problems.

Follow the following steps to set NumLock on startup as ON.

1. From the Start menu, select Run

2. Type “regedit” and hit the OK button

This will open Regedit, from here you can navigate the folders using the tree (usually in the left-hand panel)

3. Open (by clicking the + [plus] symbol) the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder

4. Then open the Control Panel folder and then Keyboard folder

5. In the Keyboard folder, different values will be listed, double-click on the InitialKeyboardIndicators string

6. This will open a new window (seen above) where you can set a value in “Value data”. Set this to 2

For those interested, here are the values that can be set for this;

0 = NumLock is turned OFF on startup
1 = NumLock is disabled
2 = NumLock is turned ON on startup

I hope this helps and saves some people some frustration.

rssowl.org

RSSOwl is a cool RSS reader application. For those of you who don’t know what an RSS reader is, here is an explanation.

What is an RSS reader? First of all, RSS (Wikipedia Article) is a format that shows regular updates from blogs, news sites etc in a standard format, so that you can easily keep up to date with all the latest information. An RSS reader is a program that collects these RSS “feeds” for you and manages them, all in one place. This means you can read your favourite blogs, with all their latest posts, all in one program!

The logo below is the standard image for RSS, so if you see a blog with this logo (such as StuffToGet.net in the top right-hand corner), it should have a feed you can subscribe to!

About RSSOwl - This is a lightweight, free and easy-to-use RSS reader. It will help you collect all your favourite RSS feeds, like the StuffToGet blog feed, all in one place. Not only can you read the articles but it’s also easy to search, sort and save them. It will automatically keep your feeds up-to-date, so you’ll always be able to read the latest headlines and posts and it’s available on most operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and more!

As far as finding blogs, you can use the in-built search function to find other blogs on your favourite topics and subscribe to them, as well as adding your current favourite blogs to RSSOwl from within your browser, just look for the RSS logo on most blogs. If you are using Firefox, you can look in the URL bar, on the right-hand side a small RSS logo will appear if a blog has a feed available, just click on this and you are on your way!

Audacity is a top-notch sound editing program that is open source and therefore 100% free. It is available on a huge number of Operating Systems including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and more. If you have used a sound editor before then you’ll find Audacity easy to use. You will be able to cut, paste and mix pieces of sounds files with other sound files, as well as changing pitch, tone and doing volume fade effects. Audacity also helps with removing static and other unwanted noise from files.

It handles most common audio formats, allowing you to import and export Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files, as well as FLAC as of it’s latest BETA version. The setup file for Windows (version 1.2) is only 2.1MB and there is also a handful of plug-ins available that add more advanced features and file handling support.

Audacity is a great program to keep handy. You’ll never know when you might need to convert a .wav to MP3 format or cut pieces out of a song to get your favourite parts and Audacity is a great free, lightweight tool for all your sound editing needs.

While this is part of the Google Account series of posts, it’s probably more likely a feature that many users will wish to disable, especially those with privacy concerns. On the other hand, many people will probably find it interesting and useful at times as well. In a nutshell, Google Web History basically logs all of your Google searches for the past 2 years (you must be logged in to your Google Account) and let’s you look through these logs. It also uses that information to provide you with some extra features such as displaying your search trends and tailoring your future search results according to your tastes. It will even recommend you links it thinks you will like.

For anyone concerned with privacy and security, the above YouTube clip is from Google and shows how you can stop the service, as well as deleting individual search history items or your entire web history if you wish. Although the probably biggest risk of other people seeing your Google Web History is them knowing your log-in details, so always remember to log-out on public computers and use good passwords.
