Audacity is a top-notch sound editing program that is open source and therefore 100% free. It is available on a huge number of Operating Systems including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and more. If you have used a sound editor before then you’ll find Audacity easy to use. You will be able to cut, paste and mix pieces of sounds files with other sound files, as well as changing pitch, tone and doing volume fade effects. Audacity also helps with removing static and other unwanted noise from files.

It handles most common audio formats, allowing you to import and export Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files, as well as FLAC as of it’s latest BETA version. The setup file for Windows (version 1.2) is only 2.1MB and there is also a handful of plug-ins available that add more advanced features and file handling support.

Audacity is a great program to keep handy. You’ll never know when you might need to convert a .wav to MP3 format or cut pieces out of a song to get your favourite parts and Audacity is a great free, lightweight tool for all your sound editing needs.

  1. Audacity is definitely the best free editing solution out there. It is surprisingly good considering it’s free. I have an installation on Linux and it works well.

  2. This is good stuff. I used to use this program to trim mp3s and make them ringtones :)

I love audacity. Sure, it could use a few features that cakewalk or protools has, but for the most part it is great for anybody on a limited budget looking for an easy solution for decent quality recordings. Even their special effects are pretty good.
